Le comte Ory de Gioacchino Rossini
Opéra de Québec
Filled with subtle bawdy insinuations, this opera unfolds during the Crusades. Countess Adèle and her attendants have sworn to live as widows in the absence of the men of the castle. Both mischievous and debauched, Count Ory employs all necessary subterfuges to end up in bed with Countess Adèle. The beautiful countess, meanwhile, is consumed with love for her cousin Isolier, who is equally smitten with her. Will virtue be preserved?
The charm of the work primarily stems from the balance between the lightness of the libretto and the refinement of the music, which avoids descending into vulgarity. The production can once again rely on the immense talent of Laurent Campellone, an experienced conductor of the French and Italian repertoire, who will express the sophistication and beauty of Rossini's score.
As for the escapades of the terrible Count Ory, they will be skillfully staged by Jean-Romain Vesperini. The one who had created a poetic setting for Gounod's Faust, presented at the Quebec Opera Festival in 2022, this time proposes a journey to the Middle Ages in a universe of chivalrous romance that is slightly offbeat and unhinged.
