La neuvième de Beethoven - OSQ

Orchestre symphonique de Québec

For the second concert of our festival dedicated to Beethoven, let us first discover the music of his colleague Anton Eberl. Eberl was also a friend of Mozart and one of the most renowned composers of his time. Thanks to the work of baroque and classical music ensembles, such as Les Violons du Roy who join our Orchestra for this concert, the works of this great musician are being rediscovered today. The overture to his opera The Queen of the Black Isles earned the admiration of Haydn. One is swept away by its pre-Romantic fervor, which splendidly introduces Beethoven's ultimate masterpiece: his Ninth Symphony.

After three movements that reveal the most powerful and diverse aspects of Beethoven's soul, the composer introduces singers and a choir to the Symphony Orchestra for the very first time. He envisioned a colossal ensemble to perform Friedrich von Schiller's Ode to Joy, a text he had wished to set to music for over thirty years. At its premiere, Beethoven was completely deaf: he did not hear the audience's ovation behind him. This musical testament remains one of the greatest works of all time.
