Steve Barakatt

Québec City native Steve Barakatt is a talented musician who has enjoyed tremendous international success through hundreds of collaborations with the biggest names in the music scene, prestigious record labels, and iconic recording studios. Bursting with hometown pride, he’s always happy to share his favourite Québec City gems. Here are some of his top picks:

  • 1

    Rue du Petit-Champlain

Many consider Rue du Petit-Champlain to be the prettiest street in the country. The Canadian Institute of Planners even named it its “Great Street” of 2014. And it’s right in my neighbourhood! It’s always charming—day or night, whatever the season. It’s also fantastic for shopping and has something for everyone, with shops offering everything from basic home goods to one-of-a-kind gifts.

  • 2

    Parc du Cavalier-du-Moulin

I wasn’t sure if I should share this spot because it’s the city’s best-kept secret and that’s what makes it so beautiful. It’s the perfect place to tuck into a book in the heart of Old Québec. It’s also the last remnant of the first French fortifications built in the 17th century.

  • 3

    Ile d’Orléans

As a wine enthusiast, I find the island’s history really inspiring! Jacques Cartier christened it “the isle of Bacchus” in 1535 because of the abundance of wild grapes growing there at the time. Having access to such a rich terroir and bucolic scenery just minutes from downtown makes for a truly extraordinary experience. Many of the region’s top chefs and restaurateurs rely on Île d’Orléans for its farm-fresh ingredients.

  • 4

    Fairmont Le Château Frontenac

Château Frontenac is a definite must-see, both for the views from Dufferin Terrace and the thrill you get from visiting its elegant lobby, restaurants, bar and its majestic ballroom. It holds so many memories for me, including when I was asked to write its official anthem. Château Frontenac is the first heritage building in the world to have its own anthem!

  • 5

    Promenade Samuel-De Champlain

Strolling along the Samuel-De Champlain Promenade is the perfect way to commune with the St. Lawrence River, the veritable lifeblood of Québec City.
